THE INVESTMENT EDITION

Existence is rarely fixed.

It is accumulated through return: to the work that must be done again, to the places that continue to hold us, to the materials, rituals, and relationships that make life possible. Long before value is assigned, measured, or exchanged, it is lived.

Sustained Presence gathers projects that consider what it means to remain in relationship with what sustains us. Across geographies and disciplines, these works trace infrastructures of everyday existence—labor, maintenance, inheritance, stewardship, and care as the sites where meaning is produced. It begins from the premise that existence does not remain abstract. It is embodied through repetition, through labor both visible and unseen, through systems that assign value, and through those that refuse its terms altogether. Presence is not simply to occupy space, but to remain accountable within it. To become legible through acts of care, production, preservation, and endurance.

Across this issue, artists from around the world assemble a living archive of tangible existence. Their projects move between domestic interiors and public rituals, inherited knowledge and speculative futures, ecological cycles and economic conditions. Together they document the often-overlooked mechanics through which lives are sustained—as evolving negotiations between people, materials, landscapes, and institutions.

Throughout the issue, value systems are questioned as much as they are documented. What is recognized, and what is overlooked? What forms of wealth exceed monetization? What persists when worth is understood through reciprocity rather than ownership alone, and through continuity rather than exception?

Together, these projects propose that sustained presence is not simply endurance, but an ongoing practice of returning: to what nourishes us, to what asks for our attention, and to the values we choose to uphold. In a moment defined by acceleration, these works remind us that what endures is often what has been quietly sustained all along.
